'The Snows of Kilimanjaro' एक शानदार मगर 'कठिन' कहानी है। इस लंबी कहानी के तीन अंश प्रस्तुत हैं। पहले मूल अंग्रेज़ी में, बाद में हिन्दी में. इस कहानी को पढ़ते हुए मुझे एडगर एलन पो, जैक लंडन, कवि वाल्ट विटमैन और हिन्दी के भुवनेश्वर याद आते रहे। बहरहाल...

"Kilimanjaro is a snow-covered mountain 19,710 feet high, and is said to be the highest mountain in Africa. Its western summit is called the Masai "Ngaje Ngai," the House of God. Close to the western summit there is the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude."

"He remembered the good times with them all, and the quarrels. They always picked the finest places to have the quarrels. And why had they always quarrelled when he was feeling best? He had never written any of that because, at first, he never wanted to hurt any one and then it seemed as though there was enough to write without it. But he had always thought that he would write it finally. There was so much to write. He had seen the world change; not just the events; although he had seen many of them and had watched the people, but he had seen the subtler change and he could remember how the people were at different times. He had been in it and he had watched it and it was his duty to write of it; but now he never would."

"And then instead of going on to Arusha they turned left, he evidently figured that they had the gas, and looking down he saw a pink sifting cloud, moving over the ground, and in the air, like the first snow in a blizzard, that comes from nowhere, and he knew the locusts were coming up from the South. Then they began to climb and they were going to the East it seemed, and then it darkened and they were in a storm, the rain so thick it seemed like flying through a waterfall, and then they were out and Compie turned his head and grinned and pointed and there, ahead, all he could see, as wide as all the world, great, high, and unbelievably white in the sun, was the square top of Kilimanjaro. And then he knew that there was where he was going."

"उनके साथ बिताया वह सुनहरा वक़्त उसे याद आया और लड़ाइयाँ। लड़ाइयों के लिए वे हमेशा सबसे खूबसूरत स्थान चुनते थे। और जब वह अच्छे मूड में होता था तभी उनकी लड़ाइयाँ क्यों शुरू हो जाती थीं? इन सब बातों पर उसने कभी कुछ नहीं लिखा, पहले तो इसलिए कि वह किसी का दिल नहीं दुखाना चाहता था और बाद में उसे लगने लगा कि उसके बगैर भी बहुत कुछ लिखा जा सकता है। लेकिन वह हमेशा सोचता था कि कभी न कभी वह सब लिखेगा ज़रूर। कितना कुछ लिखने को था। उसने दुनिया को बदलते देखा था; सिर्फ घटनाएँ नहीं; हालांकि घटनाएँ भी उसने बहुत देखी थीं और लोगों को देखा था, लेकिन उसने सूक्ष्म परिवर्तनों को देखा था और वह याद कर सकता था कि अलग-अलग समय में लोग कितने अलग नज़र आते हैं। वह उनमें रच-बस गया था और सब कुछ बहुत बारीकी से देखता था, महसूस करता था और उसका यह कर्तव्य था कि उस पर वह लिखे; मगर अब वह कभी नहीं लिखेगा।"  (italics)

"अरुषा की तरफ आगे बढ़ने की जगह वे बाएँ मुड़ गए। उसे याद आया कि गैस पर्याप्त है और नीचे नज़र दौड़ाई तो ज़मीन पर और हवा में चहलकदमी करते हुए छितराए, गुलाबी बादल दिखाई दिये, जैसे अचानक आने वाले बर्फीले तूफान का संकेत कर रहे हों और उसे मालूम था कि दक्षिण से टिड्डी दल ऊपर आ रहा है। फिर चढ़ाई शुरू हो गई और लगा कि वे पूर्वी दिशा में आगे बढ़ रहे हैं, और फिर अंधेरा होने लगा और वे तूफान में घिर गए, बारिश इतनी तेज़, जैसे कोई जल-प्रपात बरस रहा हो और फिर वे वहाँ से बाहर निकल आए और कौम्पी ने सिर एक तरफ घुमाकर इशारा किया और एक तीखी मुस्कान उसके चेहरे पर खेल रही थी। उसने उधर देखा तो सामने विशाल, ऊंचा और सफ़ेद, सूरज की रोशनी में देदीप्यमान, अतुलनीय शुभ्रता के साथ चमकता ब्रह्मांड का विस्तार फैला हुआ था, जो किलिमंजारो का वर्गाकार पठार था। और तब उसे पता चला कि जहां वह जाने वाला था, वह यही जगह है।"
